As many as 107 under trial prisoners, involved in petty crimes, were released from the Attock district jail against the surety bonds, here on Saturday. Superintendent Jail Syed Babar Ali said under trial prisoners had been released on the order of district and sessions judge Attock Irshad Mehmood Cheema during his monthly routine jail visit.

On the occasion, the district judge Cheema urged upon the released prisoners to avoid indulge in the crime again and take part in the healthy activities of the society.

Later on, the district judge along with jail superintendent Babar, Additional district and sessions judges Suhail Ikram, Raja Ikhlaq, Syed Ali Abbas, Jahangir Mir, Senior civil judge Faiz Ahmed Zaheer, Civil judges, Mansoor Qureshi, Saleem Iqbal, Aslam Gondal, Representative from civil society Professor Anwar Jalal and Dist and other jail officials visited the different departments of the jail including women and juvenile barracks, kitchen and hospital besides checking the quality of meal, which was being provided to the jail inmates.

The district judge also directed the jail officials to provide facilities to the inmates as per jail manual. Moreover, Cheema also advised judges to appoint defence counsel for those accused who cannot afford the expenses of any counsel.

Jail superintendent Baber Ali also briefed the district and sessions judge about the latest developments in the jail that includes literacy programme for the prisoners which focuses their moral and mental education. The programme would commence in collaboration with NCHD. Cheema also emphasised the representatives from civil society to frequently visit the jail for inspection and they should deliver lectures for character building of the prisoners.
